Root Canal

Root canal treatment otherwise known as endodontic treatment, is a procedure for a severely decayed or infected tooth. If left untreated, infection and spread to the surrounding tissues and can cause serious health concerns. Root canal treatment is required when the pulp or the nerve of a tooth becomes infected. This is usually a result of severe dental decay, previous history of a deep filling, cracked teeth, or traumatic injuries e.g. falls. Some common signs and symptoms of an infected tooth includes pain, swelling, discolouration, pimple on the gums discharging pus, bad taste in the mouth. Note that in some cases, there can be no pain present.

Root canal procedure consists 2 steps, the first step is to remove the infected nerve, and clean the root canals with equipment and disinfectants. The second step is to fill up the root canal space with a material to prevent bacterial re-infection. After the root canal procedure is complete, you may or may not need a crown depending on the extent of tooth destruction and other factors. If root canal treatment is not done and treatment to an infected tooth is delayed, you may require an extraction.
