Dental Implant
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jaw bone to replace missing teeth. Implants can be used to support a single crown, a bridge, and even dentures.
The first stage of a dental implant procedure involves placing the implant into the bone under local anaesthesia. You will have to wait for a few months for the implant to become stable by allowing the surrounding bone to “grow” around the implant. Thereafter, a crown can be placed over the implant and you will be able to start using the implant for function.
In some cases where there is insufficient bone, i.e. the bone may be too shallow or too thin, your dentist may inform you that a bone grafting procedure is required. Bone grafts from various sources can be placed into the implant site to allow for an implant to placed safely. Thus, it is important to speak to your dentist about replacing a missing tooth as soon as possible as delaying the procedure will allow the bone to resorb over the years.
